We took an empty warehouse space in Cape Town and converted it into a showroom, customer service centre and offices for MiRO.

MiRO is a distributor of wireless, networking, VoIP and IP video products and has a head office in Centurion, Gauteng and branches in Cape Town, Durban and Nelspruit. This fitout was for its Cape Town branch in Brooklyn.

Our Cape Town interior designers produced the layout and floorplan for the space, creating different functional areas including a showroom, a customer service and despatch area, a staff kitchen, offices, and a training room and kitchen.

The Cape Town multidisciplinary production team installed the drywalling, electrics and lighting and did the tiling and interior and exterior painting. We manufactured the counters and display units and produced all the signage and branding – in a range of media including vinyl, fabric and CNC-cut Perspex.

We used our transportable stand-in-a box, the Modulbox, to create a hospitality area for Thule’s activation at the KAP sani2c cycling stage race in KwaZulu-Natal in May.

The annual three-day, 265km mountain biking stage race takes place in the south-east of KwaZulu-Natal.

Our Modulbox was set up by our Durban team in Underberg, and a variety of furniture was included in the hospitality area and lighting was installed in the Modulbox for the evening activation.

The Modulbox is manufactured by us under license to Mo Systeme in Germany.

It can be set up quickly in both indoor and outdoor settings. Its canopies flap upwards, creating space for branding. It is ideal for events, expos, golf days and retail activations, and is available for rental or purchase.

We used several custom-designed elements to create the ‘Journey of Blood’ interactive display at the South African National Blood Service’s (SANBS) headquarters at Mount Edgecombe in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The walk-through centre allows visitors to see first-hand what happens at a blood bank, without entering the laboratory. The public can see how the blood is tested and processed before it is ready to be used to save lives.

The aim of the facility is to increase awareness of the importance of blood donation and boost donor numbers in the KwaZulu-Natal province.

We made custom iPad stands where visitors could use the touchscreens to learn more about what they were watching in the laboratories, and we used our LED fabric lightboxes for branding and information-sharing. We also created a space with comfortable furniture where visitors could sit and watch personal stories from people whose lives had been saved by blood transfusions. 

We have added some more new products to our range. We are now designing and printing stunning wallpaper for residential, corporate and retail applications. We are also printing branded fabric face masks. And our Showcase Kiosks are a versatile addition to our retail range.

We have the skills to design and build temporary structures to support the South Africa vaccination roll-out. We used our experience in event infrastructure to build the Hospital of Hope at the Cape Town International Convention Centre last year.

Our industry has a proven track record of providing quick and affordable solutions in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. From testing and isolation centres to field hospitals, the exhibition industry has re-purposed its stock to create solutions in response to this health crisis.

Our shell scheme walling is ideal for temporary builds. This simple walling system is modular and can be configured in endless ways and adapted to fit any space or structure. It can also be assembled and taken down in short time frames, and it is inexpensive, easy to transport and can be repurposed after each use.

We carry large volumes of shell scheme and have the skills and capacity to set it up. We can design layouts to fit any existing space, such as exhibition halls and other event venues. And by working with health authorities, we can ensure these meet the required Covid-19 safety measures.

The role of the exhibition industry in the global response to the pandemic is well documented. Temporary field hospitals were erected at the start of the pandemic, including seven Nightingale Hospitals in the UK and the Hospital of Hope in Cape Town. And now vaccination centres are popping up in sports halls and concert arenas in Germany, racecourses and stadiums in the UK, and exhibition centres in Belgium and Copenhagen.

Last year, we used our modular walling system to build the Hospital of Hope, which required 1 600 running metres of hard wood walling to partition 863 beds. While this project was complex and new territory for us, we had the advantage of experience doing exhibition builds. We develop good partnerships with all stakeholders so there are no communication gaps and only strong collaborations. Our sector has the ideal skill set for these kinds of projects.

We have introduced a new cost-effective solution for shopping kiosks. Our modular Showcase Kiosk range is available for short term rental – from only R9 100 ex vat for a two-week rental.

With the disruptions that Covid-19 is causing to our lives, we believe this cost-conscious and flexible option is a game changer for retailers who don’t want to be locked into long-term rental contracts.

Lydia Bergstrōm, CEO of Shabalala Designs, says, “This was a great option for us. The modules are robust, easy to move and effortless to keep clean. We were able to provide a fresh look to the exhibition every day which improved appeal to visitors and secured added interest from those who had already been to the exhibition. Our pieces are created in a wide variety of sizes and the solution provided us with many options to display our art. Most importantly, our ceramic art was showcased and looked stunning. This attracted a great deal of interest from the shoppers.”

The display cases have secure locks and tempered safety glass, and different shelving and lighting options. Twin-wheel swivel casters are standard, so you can move the counters as needed before locking them securely into place. And the seamless fabric branding is made to size to fit the kiosk’s space and location.

In June this year, we designed and built Africa’s largest dedicated Covid-19 temporary hospital at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in Cape Town, South Africa. 

The Western Cape Department of Health commissioned us to transform four exhibition halls into four separate recovery wards for the facility.

Although building a temporary hospital was not something we had done before, our team of architects, interior designers, quantity surveyors and project managers took on the challenge of creating the hospital’s infrastructure, plumbing and electrical requirements.

The project’s brief included the following specifications:

• 1 600 running metres of hard wood walling to partition 863 beds
• Oxygen, electricity, Internet, nurse calling and plumbing for each patient
• Wired Internet connection to create a paperless facility
• Over 50 plumbed basins
• 30 custom-made shower units for staff
• Extra patient toilets and showers in the marshalling yard, with multiple marquees and covered walkways
• Nurses stations, a physiotherapy unit, treatment rooms, pharmacies, donning and doffing areas and macerator rooms
• Signage, patient notice boards, directional signage, and other graphics
